  • I don't know this to be absolute fact; but, I think it has a lot to do with their interaction with each other. Grizzly bears are aggressive towards each other to assert dominance in order to get territory and mates. This aggressiveness spills over into their general personalities. Other bears just avoid each other for the most part. This is not the case with Grizzlys. They have to share territories and eating places with each other and with humans. When they do, conflicts arise. This might help a little. I hope it does. http://www.nps.gov/archive/lacl/bear_behavior_field_guide.htm
  • The current thinking is that it has to do with the habitats they evolved in. Grizzly bears prefer more open habitat, like prairies, where their main mode of defense against threats was to attack. Black bears prefer forested habitats and are more arboreal. They prefer to climb a tree to escape danger. There is a lot of variation in the aggressiveness within in each species, though. Some grizzly bears are much more tolerant the people give them credit for, while others do not appreciate even being able to see a human, and will charge.
