  • The cause of the Dancing Rocks of Racetrack Playa has not been identified scientifically, though there are two theories which appear to have become the most commonly accepted: 1. High winds. 2. High winds and sudden formation of ice caused by inundating rain and abrupt drops in temperature. (source: http://www.death-valley.us/article332.html)
  • I've heard it's rain getting the mud good and wet, and then high winds. No one knows, though, and I love the fact that NO ONE has actually seen them move! Death Valley is an awesome place by the way, I was there last year and just recently jotted down some tips on seeing it... http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2025809_see-death-valley.html

  • There are no adequate explanations. Rain, ice and other such explanations are not valid because we don't see this happen anyplace else where we have rain and ice. The rocks drag across the ground as though someone were pulling them with a rope tied around them. You cannot duplicate that with rain, wind or ice. (Wind rolls rocks.)
  • It is water, there is a river there that swells up, and it spreads across some of the Playa. When the water recedes, it pulls the rocks across the smooth, even surface.
  • 6-23-2017 It happens when a mist forms a layer of silty mud, very slick, and a wind comes out of the mountains. It is not a very strong wind, and the combination does not happen often.
