Hmmm...well, I live in the U.S., and I've always called wasps wasps and I call bees bees. I've never heard anything otherwise, unless they say something different in another part of the country.

We don't call a wasp a bee. They're totally different. A Bumble Bee is a Bee. There are also Wasps, Hornets, Yellowjackets, etc... All different.

it is not true that everyone in the US refers to wasps using the word 'bee.' i think most people who use that term don't even know there's a difference.

We don't call a wasp a bee, for it isn't a bee. I don't know where you live; but in USA a "bee" usually means a honeybee, although there are several other species of bees: bumblebee, carpenter bee, sweat bee, robber bee, mason bee, and a few others. But wasps are totally different from bees, easily reconisable on sight. The bumblebee and the carpenter bee are similar is appearance and size, about 1.5 - 2 inches long and a very large abdomen about 1/2 inch thick.
