Because maybe, like me, they HAD a religion at one time, until they came to their senses. Just because a person is an atheist or agnostic, doesn't mean that they don't know about religion. I know some atheists who are more knowledgeable about religion, than most pastors. Some atheists are former pastors. +5

Most of us non religious started with religion, and whittled our way out. I was raised to believe, so I spent my youth learning the "religious" answers to life's questions. I'm not as qualified as most to answer religious questions, but I still have my opinions.

Religion can be an interesting subject whether you are a believer or not and since it has such a huge affect on the world all of us have to live in atheist input seems fair.

I think because although they have no religion, they may have an opinion. I think it adds to the debate if it does not descend into argument,(Not the same thing as debate) I dont care to argue the rights and wrongs of a persons belief system. (I am not religious at all) I do (rarely) answer or comment and give my opinion if I think I can add to the debate.

Because, having had religion forced upon them from the moment they drew their first breath, they have formed an opinion which is as valid as anyone elses. I have a religious belief, and I keep it to myself unless I'm asked, but when I believed myself to be atheist, it was because I knew of no alternative to the main monotheistic religions, and wanted to distance myself from them, feelings that I shared with anyone who would listen.

I answer questions about religion because religion is interesting and it plays a large part in many peoples' lives. Since it is so prominant in the world today, I feel I should know a little about it. Also, as others have mentioned, I was brought up in a religion, so I am not ignorant of the issue.

In my case, I do not have 'religion', but I do have 'faith'. Big difference. I firmly believe that religion and churches have nothing to do with the higher existance that is god, they merely translate differently (different religions, churches, etc.) and then profit from them. Nobody should profit from the creator, or the highest consciousness, and to me it is just wrong. So, when I hear people talk about their 'religions', I always think that they are just repeating what their particular church's minister has repeated to them. I would rather hear about their personal faith, and what they really believe in their own heart.

Because atheists and agnostics are more qualified to answer, seeing as they've actually STUDIED religion? EVERY single atheist or agnostic I've ever encountered knows more about Christianity than any Cristian. And the more zealous and fundamentalist a someone is, the less they actually know about their religion. I once handed a Baptist minister his ass in a religious debate (he actually thought the Rapture and Tribulation, an idea made up in the late 19th century, was a Biblical concept.)

Becuase all atheists I know have studied various religions intently before making the informed decision to become atheistic. Ergo, they know plenty about the religion to be able to give an informative answer.
