  • Yes, if it encourages you to strive for what someone already has.
  • I would say no. Envy implies that you are angry or jealous of someone simply because they possess something that you do not. It also implies that you covet that item. However, if you see someone with wealth, and that inspires you to honestly work hard to achieve the same wealth, there is nothing wrong with that.
  • Does envy spur you into Positive Action ? You also want what another person has and you are willing to work hard and smart, without cutting corners ? Go for it. That is the only way to deal with your feelings of envy. Anything else will be destructive.
  • I do not think envy is usually a good thing. Whether or not envy is EVER a good thing is hard to say. I am sure it could serve as a motivator for a person to set higher goals for whatever s/he strives to achieve. +5
  • No, a person must be content or they wont be happy. Envy only causes destress and anger. And they will never be satisfied with what they have been delt. Gotta be content. Even if you have nothing.
  • It's not, but we all do it. But the thing that we have to remember is that you don't know what those people went through to get them where they are. Every one goes through their hustle period before they can find stability and success. It takes awhile, but just remember when you look at that person that it could be you easily.
  • Well, it's a really bad thing... But it can be also inspiring, 'cause if you want something so bad sometime, and you envy a person for having that but you don't, you ask yourself "Why should he have that, and not me? What does he have that I don't?"Etc... So, those thoughts inspire you, making you work hard and earn what you really wanted. Though, still. It's a bad really thing. :)
  • Yes, because envy is inspiring to those who want to work hard. Those who replied "no" to this question have probably given up.
  • It certainly is a great motivater!
  • Yes, as I have used it as a motivator many times.
  • Only if they are envying me.
  • depends when someone puts those emotions into the right thing it can do a lot for them you may envy your superior at work which inspires you to work twice as hard and someday become his partner or better :)
  • For use of admiration ... yes!
  • ONLY when it drives you to be a better person. ;-)
  • In small doses it can be. If it inspires you to do better, achieve more and etc. it is a good thing.
  • Socrates said that envy is the ulcer of the soul; it eats away your peace of mind and causes you numerous pains and ailments. Aristotle defined envy as the pain caused by the good fortune of others, while Kant defined it as a reluctance to see our own well-being overshadowed by another's because the standard we use to see how well off we are is not the intrinsic worth of our own well-being but how it compares with that of others – In plain English we miss seeing who we are because we are always comparing notes with others.
