  • I think Polio was diagnosed around the 17-1800's. It's a rather serious disease...does anyone know if it affects the bloostream? I thought it did. It is a bad disease, though.
  • Polio is a disease, so it was not "founded". From www.polio.com Polio was one of the most dreaded childhood diseases of the 20th century in the United States. Polio epidemics crippled thousands of people, mostly young children, each year.1 Most of us don't remember how terrified parents were that polio would leave their children unable to walk or force them to spend the rest of their lives in an iron lung. Since the polio vaccines became available, the disease has more or less disappeared from the US and the Western Hemisphere. But it still occurs in some parts of the world. A single infection brought into the US by someone traveling from a country where polio still persists could possibly lead to polio epidemics again if we were not protected. That is why we continue to vaccinate. Polio is a highly contagious disease that is caused by a virus that primarily lives in the intestines and human feces. The poliovirus is spread from person-to- person primarily through oral contact with the feces of an infected person (for example, by changing diapers); it can also spread through contaminated food or water, especially in areas with poor sanitation systems. There have also been cases that have been transmitted by direct oral contact or by droplet spread. Once inside the body, the poliovirus multiplies in the throat and intestinal tract, then travels through the bloodstream where it infects the brain and spinal cord. Paralysis occurs because the polio virus attacks the nervous system and damages or destroys the nerves that send messages between the brain and the muscles. http://www.polio.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Sponsor
  • Polio is a disease. It was not "founded." Do you perhaps mean "Polo," the sport played on horses?
  • polio outbeaks were around for years before doctor's realized what it was, but around 1889 doctor's atarted working on a cure for it instead of trying to maintain it like they did in the beginig. Then, Jonas E. Salk - a specialist in virus research, developed a vaccine to combat paralytic polio in 1953. Congress awarded him the medal for Distingushed Civilian Achievement for his work.
