  • Story time... I would have never gotten through my first year of teaching 3rd grade if it were not for the parents... Out of the 15 kids I had, 13 of them had older siblings I knew when I used to help out at the school when I was in high school... (another one was the younger brother of someone I went to high school with)... My story is about the 15th kid... He came to the Academy from a public school, this was his first year... Apparently I made a great impression on him, and on the Friday of Back to School night he was sad... I asked him why, and he replied that his mom was not going to make it that night... I said that it was okay, I can just send the packet of info home with him... The day went along, I dismissed the kids when school was out and I noticed he left the packet on his desk... I thought this strange... Back to school night, came and passed, and as I was leaving my room I grabbed the info packet... On Saturday I decided to take the packet to his house... The student opened the door, and ran and got his mom... I smiled and handed her the packet, and was getting ready to leave when the student asked if I had wanted to stay and explain the packet to his mom... The mom said that she was just making sandwiches and that it would not be trouble for her to make another... Well, me being a guy and single, would never turn down free food... It ended up being an amusing afternoon, I had a great time... Monday came... The student was sitting in his seat just smiling... It started to creep me out... At first recess, I dismissed the class, but held him back and asked him why he was smiling so much? (I also reinforced that it is not a bad thing too smile, so please don't take that wrong) He responded that his mom had a really great time that afternoon and asked me if I appreciated the fact that he got me to come his house and meet his mom... Apparently his mom and dad had a bad divorce back at the beginning of summer and that they moved and that is how he came to the school... And this little guy was trying to hook me up with his mom... I talked with his mom about it, and we both got a good laugh... Today, she is happily married, with a baby on the way, to a mutual friend... And I'm still looking for Ms. Right... P.S. I'll try to not have such long stories next time...
  • Skin infections and rashes. They are common in children and can be caused by all sorts of viral infections, which may or may not be contagious.
  • After driving a school bus for quite a few years there is nothing surprising a child can bring home from school. I guarantee you if they can carry it or get it or catch it a child will bring it home. What is worse is when they drop it on the floor of the bus or on the seats and I have to clean it up. There were some things I would not allow on the bus and would inform the teacher each year of those items. Such as clay (Play Dough) or goop. Something else I would not allow in the bus is sunflower seeds. It takes months to get them swept up and gone.
