I used to have to dial 10 digits (actually 11 when you count the "1," which also pissed me off). Then I switched to phone service from my cable company and I no longer have to dial the area code for my own area code, and I'm back to seven digits. I understand that Vonage and similar services don't require 10/11-digit dialing either.
