  • 12-30-2016 AC motors don't work well with dimmers.
  • the speed of an AC fan is determined by the length of the wire in the motor. There are taps that lengthen or shorten the length of wire being used for the speed desired. The armature in the motor is "dragged" around by the AC cycle. The less drag produced by the amount of coil used the faster the fan will spin. This is why a dimmer switch will not work well on fan motors of the type you are talking about.
