I would like to think it is because of great talent discovered by art aficionados and then by word-of-mouth which would reach the public via art shows and articles written about the artist. Of course art appreciation is truly in the eye of the beholder and I have seen some pieces of "art" costing hundreds of thousands of dollars that are quite unlovely to my untrained eye! :)

It's his ability to identify the interest of the people. An artist's fame doesn't depend on his skill alone. It also depends on how much he can relate himself, his skills to nature and people.

What makes an artist famous is, of course, exposure and a good measure of luck. What makes an artist an artist is the ability to touch the emotions of others with his art.

being dead. Of course, they must also actually be good and do a lot of networking but being dead is the ultimate key to artistic fame.

Talent is one thing, but not the only most important thing. The company or agent that promotes you is important. I don't know how much artists pay these people, but it must be a lot. Many times if a famous person buys your painting, that gets you noticed and on your way to success. I wonder though, do the artists then give the famous people some paintings. A lot if about P.R.
