One good scotch I've had is Laphroig, aged 15 years. Very earthy, peaty flavor. I can't speak about the others as I'm not a scotch drinker at all really, but this one was striking in that it had such a deep, earthy flavor.

Glenlivet tastes more like a blend to me, Glenfidditch I've only had the solera reserve version of, it was nice though. Glenrothes has a nice 1991 bottle for under $100 though, I'd recommend that. Laphroaig isn't really for a single malt first timer in my mind.
