  • SATA II drives and controllers are backwards compatible to SATA I. The connectors and cables are the same, so no converters are needed. Actually, the term SATA II is a misnomer and according to the SATA-IO, they are officially referred to as SATA/150 (SATA I) and SATA/300 (SATA II), based off of their maximum data throughput (in MB/s). This is the biggest difference between the 2 SATA standards you are asking about.
