If done properly, the numbers and or words are codes used to indicate which play the team will follow. every play has a number. while in the huddle the quarterback will tell the team which set of numbers will be the right set as to cause confusion to the other team. The quarterback has to see how the opposing team is set up before he can really decide on the number play that need to go down.
