  • Life Savers were invented in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a Cleveland-area chocolatier who was looking for a candy that wouldn't melt in the summertime. The original Life Savers were peppermint flavored and marketed as breath mints. It was the shape that inspired the name.
  • WarriorSoul is right -- just wanted to add somethiing about where the name did not come from. There is an urban legend about the creation of Life Savers which states that the creator's daughter died after choking on a hard candy, and that the hole in the middle was included to prevent further death (thus earning the name Life Saver). This tale is often mistaken for truth and is probably more well-known than the real origin story.
  • Funny how I just tried Life Savers again for the first time in like 20-15 years and they taste like a Jolly Rancher or the Jolly Rancher taste like them. Both have a very strong robust flavor By the way want to quit smoking every time you want a cigarette put a Life Saver in your mouth instead. I have been without a cigarette now for going on 3 days. See a Life Saver can save a Life, But remember only Jesus can Save your Soul. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-4 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103 I hope this inspires you to seek the true candy of life and that He Christ can taste as sweet as a life saver to you. Because He Christ is the saver of my life.
  • It got that name because they looked just like the live saver ring on ships and boats. Remember that the candy was invented the same year the Titanic sank.
