Wow, it surprising how many really poor answers* have been offered so far. Anyway, this is a tough question because so many inventions build upon earlier ones, either directly or indirectly. Anyway, I have thought about this before and I think if I had to pick one, out of sequence, it would be electricity. I think Nikola Telsa was the greatest inventor; many would say Thomas Edison, who was his comtemporary and competitor, but Telsa's work was more compelling. *I like the answer "fire," but that was really a discovery, not an invention.
