  • A monomer is one unit of the substance being polymerised. An Oligomer is a relatively short chain, or number of units of the polymer. A repeat unit is the actual structure that is being repeated in the polymer chain. For example, in many polymers some group in the monomer is reacting with the same or something else in another monomer linking them together and expelling a small stable molecule, in Nature often a water molecule (eg, sugars linking together to form the starch or cellulose polymers). The repeat unit is then not a complete monomer because a small bit has been removed. I the case of sugars, it is a H from one and an OH from another to eliminate H2O from the chain.
