A nut maybe? Lol....Apparently it is a 'drupe' which is a hard shell encased in a fibrous outer layer etc. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-coconut

It's a fruit.

Fruit. It's called a nut, but it's actually like a melon.

I consider them fruits. "Coconuts are the fruit of the coconut palm, botanically known as cocos nucifera, with nucifera meaning "nut-bearing." More info: http://homecooking.about.com/od/foodhistory/a/coconuthistory.htm

It's considered a fruit but it's actually a seed of the coconut palm.

botanically it's a fruit more specifically a drupe which is a stone fruit. The USDA requires it be labeled as a nut. When using loose definitions, the coconut can be all three: a fruit, a nut, and a seed.
