  • I think I would choose "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins.
  • I think something like A Short History of Nearly Everything', by Bill Bryson
  • 'A letter to a Christian Nation', by Sam Harris I think. But only since I have already read the God Delusion.
  • From what I can tell, the Bible itself is the book that, once read, inspires people to abandon belief in a deity more than any other book. Time and time again I am told by Atheists that the Bible itself is the reason that they are Atheist. So, if I wanted to inspire Atheism, I'd leave the Bibles.
  • I think it is kind of a shame that there is not something written on the in between. Like "OK, the Bible is crazy, but what is this feeling?". For all of us agnostics out there.
  • How about "Why I am not a Christian" by Bertrand Russell?
  • God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens
  • I'd do something really novel like a fill in the blank Bable where people could use their imagination and have a blast in the process
  • My life turned around while reading an excerpt from Richard Dawkins's "The Selfish Gene" that appeared about 10 years ago in Scientific American. Wikipedia has a brief summary here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Selfish_Gene "The Selfish Gene" presents a way of looking at natural selection that makes it intuitively obvious. Dawkins published "The Selfish Gene" in 1976, 32 years ago, but it hasn't yet become a part of America's pop culture, like black holes and Einstein's E=mc^2. Oxford University Press released a 30-year anniversary edition in March, 2006. http://www.oup.com/us/catalog/general/subject/LifeSciences/Genetics/~~/dmlldz11c2EmY2k9OTc4MDE5OTI5MTE1MQ== http://richarddawkins.net/
  • Absolutely. "God is not Great" by Christopher Hitchens. My reaction to it was disbelief that such a book should have to be written ... but it did have to be written! I'm sure you've heard him but, just in case, here's a flavour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGt5IKDw_0A
  • There seems to be no consensus here...so why not come back in 2000 years and see what has lasted.
  • The Bible.
  • I wouldn't choose any specific book. That goes against the grain somewhat. Perhaps just a note saying "investigate the matter for yourself and don't believe everything you're told" would do the trick.
  • Neither. I have my Qu'ran with me.
  • This might not answer your question but, I would like a different random book in every hotel room. I am not comforted at all by boredom. But give me something different and I'll be tempted to enjoy myself. Any of the non-fiction by Colin Wilson (outsider series) as well as anything by and Nietzsche or Camus etc. Kierkegaard is ok even if a believer. It is all almost as depresing as the bible but in general more refreshing since it is not overdone in our society. By the way its not the Bible that sets me over the edge against christianity its the christians. The Bible is just a funny book. That reminds me "In Praise of Folly" by Erasmus is a must read - Erasmus is as responible as anyone for the greek version being translated. Read in Praise of Folly and you'll understand why.
  • Richard Dawkins 'The God Delusion'
  • The book would read like this: "There are 6.3 billion gods on this planet. You are responsible for your own actions. No one is going to save you if you can't save yourself. Look inside yourself for answers, or ask one of your fellow Gods for advice or help. Help your neighbor and do not lie cheat or steal. When you die your remains will become part of the earth and new life will spring from your earthly body, thus you will live on forever in one form or the other, but your conscience will be altered maybe to the extent that you are not self aware. Live life to the fullest and do not expect to get a second chance when you die. Make your friends and neighbors happy but always look after number one."
  • Any good science textbook.
  • The book I brought with me. I get the atheist view all around me and in the news, papers and politics and the bible is crap so there ya go. Never leave home without a good book that you brought yourself.
  • I guess you'd first have to find someone generous enough to donate all those books, like the Gideons Society does. I have a feeling it won't happen.
  • Well, whether I believe in God or not, I would choose the Bible. It's full of history and poetry. A book on atheism was probably written by some cranky person who just want to convince you that they are right. It's all ego driven. Now why would I want to read a book by someone like that?
  • The God Delusion Tea Pot by Richard Dawkins
