  • The sigma notation is not set in stone. Basically the capital sigma symbol is used as an abbreviation for "sum". There's more than one way to do this. The most clear is to write a large capital sigma and under that, in small writing , write "positive three-digit integers divisible by 5". OR instead, write this to the right or under the sigma: {x | x has three digits and is divisible by five } which is read as "the set of x such that x has three digits and is divisible by five" That's all you need to do. But as it's unlikely your teacher knows this. In fact your teacher probably only knows the form of the sigma where under it you write [letter]=[some integer] and above it you write [some larger integer], and the sum is taken between all integers between these numbers inclusive. In that case the solution will look a bit like: 199 SIGMA 5i i=20 See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigma_notation for some of the more common versions of Sigma notation.

  • Try this out: 179 Σ (5i+100) i=0
