The area of the surface of a sphere is 4*pi*r^2, Google tells me that the "radius of the earth in inches" is 251106299. So we feed that all into Googl, and divide the result by 2240 to get it in tons: "4 * pi * 251106299 * 251106299 * 14 / 2240", and get the answer 4.95227891 × 10^15, or about five thousand million million tons.
