  • When I graduated from Purdue University, they gave each of us a pamphlet detailing the history of the cap and gown. I don’t remember all the details, but I do remember that it ultimately went back thousands of years and was rooted in ancient religious garb. HTH!
  • 2-23-2017 The word academic comes from Greek akademos, which was a grove near Athens sacred to the goddess of wisdom. Membership was by invitation and they wore the robe and hat that have been associated with scholars ever since. The academic society was and still is exclusive and arrogant. The most famous member was Aristotle, whose name is to this day a synonym for "arrogant jerk". It has always been more important to be accepted by the consensus than to be right.
