  • Alcohol has a much lower freezing point than water: -117C, compared to water at 0C. A mixture of water and alcohol has a freezing point somewhere between. Since whisky is standardised at 40 proof i.e. 20% alcohol, the freezing point of a whisky wil be something like -24C. Since domestic freezers are normally set to -18C, you will never freeze the mixture. Actually, if you leave it long enough, the alcohol will begin to separate out and the remainimg water to freeze. However, the mushy ice you get will have very little alcohol in it, so you will not get the result you want.
