It is not the age alone that determines the price. A painting that is worth Millions of dollars normally has a unique quality that is sought after by many people. The recent record prices for works of Classical Modernism (Klimt) and American Postwar painting (Rothko, Warhol) is only the tip of a huge iceberg created by hysteria. The art market is inflated, but it is unlikely that the prices for top quality works will go down any time soon. Essentially, the market value of a work of art is arbitrary and has only temporary validity. The greatest works of art are priceless and belong to the cultural heritage of mankind in general.
