Without googling anything, I know that Gandhi promoted the concept of peaceful resistance for India to gain independence from the British. He hardly had any possessions, but people valued his thoughts very highly.

Abridged from wikipedia: Ghandi was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. Gandhi practiced and advocated non-violence and truth in all situations. He advocated the principle of protest by non-cooperation, to gain national independence from the British occupiers. Here is one of my favorite quotes: "When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall — think of it, always."
