  • The Berlin wall was built by the administration of the German Democratic Republic, back in 1961. The regime, headed by Walther Ulbricht, claimed to protect their territory from the invasion of imperialists, but in fact it was a prison wall keeping the people from Eastern Germany from emigrating to the democratic West. It was logical, if unexpected by many, that the wall finally came down in 1989. By the way, you will probably be able to google tons of information about the history of the Berlin wall. Who do you mean by "we" when you talk about knocking it down? I think it was possible to get rid of the wall mainly because of the politics by Michael Gorbachev, who really initiated the change of the Socialist world.
