Hmm.. by what standards? Musicians have been filmed for years. If you are referring to MTV I guess one could check their site. You could also read up here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_video#History_of_music_videos

If you are referring to the first video played on MTV, it was "Video Killed the Radio Star". In other words, MTV was engaging in some rather wishful thinking when they came on the air.

The first video used in place of a live rendition of a song was Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. That was back in 1973 or something. Now you rarely see a live performance.

According to (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_video) the first "music video" (by today's definition) was made in 1929: Blues singer Bessie Smith appeared in a two-reel short film called "Saint Louis Blues" featuring a dramatized performance of the hit song. It was shown in theatres until 1932. The term "rock video" was coined in 1959, and a French company invented the first "visual jukebox" in 1960. By the mid-60's it was common for bands to promote their music with music video's. Here's an old favorite -- Syd Barrett -- pre-Pink Floyd -- from around 1965.
