I personally do. I understand why they waited though, The LOTR was a bigger draw and by raising interest with them they guaranteed a bigger box office for The Hobbit!

No, the books were published the same way. I like preludes / prequels.

There was an animated hobbit film made for TV in 1977. I have a copy of it. However, the live action one makes just as much sense either way, so I'm OK with it.

nah i don't think so, the hobbit was made more for children anyway and the LOTR more for adults so it doesn't make alot of difference...

No, not necessarily. The ONLY thing that upsets me about this Hobbit film (or films... there is a rumour that this will be a two-parter) is the lack of Ian Holm as Bilbo.
