I'm an American, and I say "Huhn-die". The "ai" diphthong is pronouced "eye" in most foreign languages except standard English of course. Seems like all other Americans butcher it by saying "hun-dee" or "hun-day". So wrong if you ask me.

When they first arrived in australia, the ads said "Hi-oon-die", but the Koreans objected and since then, they have said "Hee-un-day".

It's Hyun-day...watch the commercials. That's how they pronounce it and they should know.

Hyundai is pronounced HIE-YUN-DIE. The "Sunday" thing is an advertising gimmick. Let's ask Jeff Bridges to deep six the HIE-YUN-DIE voice-over commercials and start rooting for the Home Team !

I am Canadian born but my parents are both Korean. It is not a marketing ploy. Ask any Korean. If you look at Hyundai in its Korean character form (현대), it is pronounced heeyun-deh but the huh and yuh are prounounced with a liason. "Hee-un-day" is a very close pronunciation as well. Sometimes out of laziness, it may be pronounced "hunday". Korean uses a lot of aspiration so it's not always clearly heard. It is 100% NOT pronounced hi-yun-day, hi-yun-die, huhn-die or huh-yun-die. If a Korean pronounced it any of the aforemetioned ways, they would be laughed at.

you are a gimmick paddy. it is pronounced as "he" (as in the pronoun) - yon (the vowel should be pronounced the same as the vowels in the word "young" except it ends with an n, instead of ng) then deh or dae. but the "he-yon" part should be pronounced short coz it is actually one syllable with one vowel (in korean). keep in mind that koreans use the same vowel for hyun(dai), young, and sean if they were to write these words in korean. and the vowel used in "-dai" is close to the (sound of) vowels in bang or dang or fat instead of beg or keg, that's why i hesitate to say that it sounds like deh even though it's pretty damn close. so it doesn't quite rhyme with sunday in korean, but they probably thought that it was close enough and easier to pronounce for the english speakers. the commercial was used actually to "correct" the mispronunciations and to give a guide. but still i believe that it was hyundai's fault that they spelled their brand in such weird way (at the same time, with the roman alphabet, it is practically impossible to spell it in a way that the non-korean speakers can imagine how to pronounce.)
