There is also the ten-tailed beast, the Juubi. It is the original demon, the first tailed beast. The other tailed beasts were created from the Juubi. The Sage of Six Paths defeated the Ten-tailed beast and sealed its powers within himself (making him the first jinchuuriki). However, he knew that when he died the seal would break and the Juubi would be freed. He divided and released the chakras of the Juubi, creating the nine tailed-beasts. Then he sealed its body inside a massive stone orb and threw it into the sky, which created the moon. I'll leave out the spoilers involving it... =P
