  • sounds like bs to me the kids did'nt do anything
  • School officials are probably on edge right now about any kind of fighting, after seeing the YouTube video of several girls beating the heck out of another girl. I think the school wants to make the point that "if you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem." The school needs to make it clear to the kids and to their parents what is expected when a student sees a fight break out. If that hasn't been made clear there is no cause for suspension, in my opinion.
  • If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.
  • yes, if somone would have gotten hurt and they could have done something to prevent it it would be horrible
  • If the stated school policy is for observers of a fight to report it or face the consequences, then they should get in trouble if they did not follow the rules.
  • I believe that if u are just standing around watching ur guilty of not doing something to stop it, therefor u should get the same consequence as the people fighting.
  • In every school I've ever gone to, kids were encouraged not to do anything. If they got into the fight, even if they were just trying to stop it, they were always seen as being just as guilty as the fighters. It was ridiculous, but there ya go.
  • I dont think they should! Its human nature for us to be curious, we are going to watch! I dont know what i would have done if i had gotten suspended for every fight i watched in school!
  • Nope, no one should expect them to break it up...they'd probably just get stuck in the fight themselves. If they're in trouble b/c they watched it, then that's even more obtuse, because it wasn't their fault that it happened, they just were watching.
  • hell no. let kids be kids. they are going to fight, and others want to see it. you cant blame them for watching.

Sure, but it matters *WHO* was fighting, because it could be bullying and the spectators are tacit support.
  • thats pretty dumb. in my school the victim of the fight can be suspended even if they dont fight back. its retarded
  • When my kids started school, the new technique for anti-bullying was to put the responsibility on the kids' shoulders. Speak up, step in, that sort of thing. Even in elementary school the kids were taught to step forward and say "that's not nice, don't do that...don't say that". Although I understand the goal, and it has been quite successful at reducing bullying behavior, I think it is putting too much responsibility on the kids and not enough on the educators that should be supervising them. They are the ones charged with the safety of the students in their school. I certainly don't think all the kids should be suspended. Suspension from the learning environment should be reserved for the seriously problematic students. For the rest, it sounds like a good excuse to hold an assembly and torture them with lessons in making better choices and what they SHOULD have done instead of watching.
  • What's new? Kids fight constantly! It's called growing up!
  • They probably sat there filming it on their phones, laughing all the while. Typical.

That type of tacit approval is how bullying becomes institutionalized bigotry and abuse. Scrawny, glasses, freckles, you name it. Hazing is the next step.

Parents need to start beating the hell out of their kids. Lack of discipline at home leads to sorry-assed kids.
