If the square peg is significantly smaller than the round hole, there should really be no problem.

I borrow Jodie44's chisel and knock the corners off the square peg until it fits the round hole.

put it in there, hoping the square peg is a lot smaller than the hole..

Make sure that the measurement of the diagonal width of the square peg is less than twice the radius of the circle...that should do it.
