  • Use CFLs.
  • - Use flourescent bulbs when possible - Turn off unnecessary appliances - only do full loads of laundry/dishes - install a programmable thermostat
  • Become Amish! But seriously, English, get some energy saving light bulbs. make sure the next refrigerator you get has a good rating on energy use. Read books instead of watching TV. If you have property with a stream, put a homemade electric generator, some windmills, solar panels if you have the money.
  • I keep my thermostat set low throughout the day and change it when I get home to warm the house up (or cool it off) while I'm home. Then, in the winter, I'll turn it back down before bed, and pile an extra blanket on the bed. Also, I close off the guest room and the vent into that room, so as not to heat or cool a room I don't need. I now shut my computer off when I'm gone, instead of leaving it and the monitor running at all times. I unplugged the old refrigerator that I wasn't really using. I don't really need it, and it sucks the electricity.
  • I read the other day that you should buy a new refrigerator every 10 years weather you think you need one or not. I guess after they are that old, they are no longer energy efficient. Also you should unplug your small appliance because they draw a small amount of electricity even when not turned on if they're plugged in.
  • 1. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. 2. Put all appliances that use trickle current to keep warm or have an unneeded clock on a power cord switch so you can turn of the current when the unit is not needed (TV, VCR, DVD, computer, printer, etc.) 3. Open shades and blinds during the day so you don't need to turn on the lights. 4. Buy energy efficient appliances including aid conditioners, washers and dryers, heat pumps, refrigrators, furnaces, etc. They are constantly making them more energy efficient.
  • if you have a video player - dont leave it on stand-by, apparently these and fridge freezers use the max electric!
  • I hang my clothing on a line to dry verses drying them in a dryer. i replaced all my bulbs with energy smart bulbs. I open windows to cool the house when at all possible. I cook on my grill as much as possible instead of the stove.
  • in the winter i try to use the oven as much as possible then after the dinner is cooked i leave the door open while it is cooling down to help heat my house and in the summer i BBQ as much as possible to help keep my house cool and you less elec.
