  • North America uses the NTSC television standard. Most of the rest of the world uses PAL.
  • DVDs and DVD players are region coded. AA DVD coded for one region will not play in a player for another (though there are unlock codes for many DVD players). The US and Canada are region 1; Australia is region 4. This is a lock designed by the DVD manufacturer to allow different release dates in different areas. It also allows different prices to be charged in rich and poor countries. You might want to search the net with the name of your DVD player to see if there is an unlock code for it which will allow it to play any region.
  • It's just different regional codecs. Like North America uses NTSC (National Television System Committee) And the UK uses PAL (Phase Alternation Line). You can get these converted like converting DVD to Mpeg-2
