I hate shopping, I try to get it over as fast as possible. That being said, I've recently taken to "hauling up" meaning I'll spend two hours in the store, and get food for three weeks or so. This has led me to almost always grab from the back, everything always seems to be more fresh there.

I look for the newest item when it comes to milk products, most other thing I just buy because we will consume them soon
-
I almost never take the items in front. I always make sure the package is not damaged and the expiration date isn't too soon.

I never take from the front

Most of the time I get the ones from the front, UNLESS they don't look as good or are damaged in some way.
-
I always buy the milk with the latest expiration date but on other items I just take from the front.

Ok, add another "reacher" to the list. lol I check the dates on milk, dairy, OJ, etc .. but just "reach" without reading for canned stuff. Built into my genes? :) I reach for boxed stuff too . cereal and such. Shoot, I lift up fresh fruits and vegetables .. even if almost identical .. til I find "just the right one". lol

Reach back and look for new dates
-
Bread and milk ...I will go to the back shelf to get them. Anything else I just grab.
-
Sometimes I will look farther toward the back to see if I can find milk that has a later date. I never do that with meats or canned goods.
-
I always check out dates and take the freshest. It's my money, I want items that have the longest shelf life left in them.
-
I pull out items and double check them. Having been a stock clerk when young, I know some of the tricks we used to do in order to get the old stuff passed.
-
Some things - milk I always check for longest life, others not so often.
