  • While it's true a horse lives almost it's whole life standing, and could theoretically be in pain and you would be 'putting it out of it's misery". I think it is (sadly) more a case of, if it can't make money why spend money keeping it around. While I strongly object to this, many people look at horses as nothing more than a commodity.
  • It depends on the nature of the fracture. If you are referring to Babaro, if you'd seen the damage done, I'm surprised they didn't put him down on the track. Some mild fractures ( cracks and chips) can with therapy heal and the horse put to stud or brood. Ther's an excellent clinic for this that the Guelph University Equine program uses, just down the road from me.Their success rate is phenomenol. In the case of racing, I'm afraid you're right in that it's mostly money motivated above the trainers. If it wasn't, they wouldn't be racing "childeren", because that's what these horses are, their bones have yet to fully develop. We'd likely see fewer horrendous injuries, but slower races if they used adult hayburners. Part of this is my own personal opinion as a horse owner. I would never think of even getting on a Hunter at 3 years of age, other than using some weight and a saddle for lunging purposes.Fence work, even cavaletti, no way.
  • Well, horses basically live on their legs, and lay down very seldom. So, if a horse breaks its leg, it would be very hard for the horse to live. And it would be very expensive to heal them, which is a bad reason, but some owners are that cheap.
  • I recall my deep south, African American, farmer, uncles (in the 60,s and 70,s) putting a wounded plow horse in a body sling and taking care of it like a baby. They said something about the horse being too heavy to heal on its own (without noticeable deformity) and something about acidity in a horses muscles being another deterrent to well healing. That's my vague penny's worth.
  • Because a horse needs ALL 4 legs. If it can't use one it cannot stand, hence it cannot walk, pretty much can't live. Really sad to think bout, but that's how some things go down =[
  • Horses legs cant repair as well as other animals legs can.. it is just kinder to put the horse down
  • Horses have to be 'put down' after a leg fracture because they have to distribute there weight properly on all of their legs. Also, a horse with three legs cannot be ridden, (i DO NOT belive this, but that is what some people belive they are good for) Plus, a three legged horse could easily develop laminitis(spelling?). It is very expencive to have a horse rigged to properly have its leg healed because of your medicine and the sling thingy that has to hold him up. (this is useed because if horse lie down over too long of a time, the side on the bottom will begin to deteriorate).
  • Because it can no longer run races and make money for its owners.
  • Not all of them are, it all depends on the severity of the break, initially, plus the vet fees v the value of the horse
