  • I started out by learning how to float. I was 16. If you can float, you can do almost anything in the water. I am still not the best swimmer but I have had no fear of the water since that time. I have even learned how to do SCUBA. And I, too, had those swimming lessons when I was a kid. This is something you will have to learn for yourself and conquer your own fears. I did it and so can you.
  • i think that you have not learned the proper techniques yet, which is not your fault. the best thing to do, for now, is to research the proper swimming techniques in the internet, print out the important facts if you need to, and keep these in mind when you go for your next swimming lessons. if you have any fear of water, banish them. you will be taught by professionals, so be assured that your safety will be guaranteed. lastly, have a positive attitude. you can do it! :o)
  • As long as you have air in your lungs you will float. All swimming is about is teaching you how to propel your self in water, and ridding the fear of drowning and knowing your limits. You will always float just under the water line, you then use your hands to propel yourself above water or under, backwards or forwards. Fear is the most important thing to either control or be rid of, this is the biggest factor for people not knowing how to swim.
  • If you've been taking lessons since 4 and you're 14 now, it sounds like you may have an almost phobic fear of drowning. If you learn to float on your back first, then to tread water (keeping yourself afloat by kicking and moving your arms slowly), that fear should fade. Then you just think of swimming as treading water horizontally. Knowing you can float, and knowing you CAN tread water will make it much easier to learn.
