Are you really that thirsty? the human body is already 75% water. i hope this question is not a prelude for a person to commit suicide. I really do not believe a human could just drink water, to die. this is the function of the kidneys. you most likely would pee yourself to death, rather than death from overdosing on water.

Actually, it is possible to die by over hydration. Consuming too much water can cause an electrolytic imbalance and also for the body's sodium levels to drop significantly enough to cause brain swelling leading to death. Here's a case exaple. http://www.childrenintherapy.org/victims/killpack.html As to how much water that would take, would depend on your current state of hydration, body weight and overall health. If you want an exact volume of water for this to happen, I can only suggest two ways. 1/ ask your doctor or 2/ Experiment. You won't know the final answer, but we might read about it in the news. Here's someone that DID make the news: http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/World/2007/01/13/3361687-ap.html She drank approximately 4 liters and was dead in hours.

Check out wikipedia, or the Philadelphia Inquirer from this past winter. The average person will die if they consume 4-6 gallons of water at one time...that does not mean that if you're working in a hot sun and during the day drink 6 gallons of water you will die though...The reason excess water consumption would kill you is because as the water passes through your body, and you excrete it, excessive amounts of electrolytes would be lost. Additionally there would be an overtaxing of the lymph, liver, kidneys, and vascular system to accomodate all this water.
