  • They can be prone to put on more weight after neutering, which is why most vets recommend that you reduce the amount of food you feed by a third after neutering then go back for a weight check a couple of months later to see how things are going. its just due to their energy requirements being lower after neutering. In some cases neutering can be used to control some forms of aggression in male dogs, and in those cases in has the potential to make them less aggressive just because they will have less testosterone in their system, but otherwise your dogs personality shouldnt change at all, if he or she is bouncy and happy before hand they should still be bouncy and happy afterwards :-)
  • Both dogs and cat normally have a weight increase after neutering, I have been told this is due to the hormone levels changing, plus stress of hormones is decreased in both sexes. As a breeder I always advise people who have kittens or puppies from me to neuter as early as possible for the animals best interest.
  • Just noticed full question, soz. Weight gain normal, so keep an eye on diet/food intake. Personality can well change for the better, most certainly improve males, turn them from being agressive into "pussies" - best done early as possible. Also I have known of entire males who have who have turned very nasty on their owners, so best to neuter them all if not to be bred from.
  • My dog gained about 6 lbs after I had him neutered, he was never a aggressive dog before, he would occasionally run out the door to play with the female dogs. 4 years later he still the most obiedent & loving dog ever.
  • When we had our dog fixed we brought him home and as soon as he got out of the car he was running all over our neighborhood, he came home all out of breath and panting. Went back to the vet to ask what kind of medication he administerd, the vet said "nothing unusual other than anaesthetic, what your dog was doing is probably cancelling dates with the bitches he knew".
  • I have a 2 year old JRT that we rescued about a year ago. He was a bit aggressive towards male dogs, but mostly just assertive more than aggressive. If you know JRT's then you know this is how he should be. They SHOULD be assertive and high energy and they SHOULD be fearless. After having him fixed he's definitly not the same dog. I regret this very much and feel very sad sometimes when I watch him interact. In most cases people would be pleased with the results. He does'nt go crazy around bitchs in heat. He much less agressive and doesn't attack my bulldog anymore when the bulldog gets in his face. I wanted that part to go away. My bulldog deserves it sometimes, but he still shouldn't get attacked every single day. Problem is he's lost his assertiveness and doesn't stand up for himself anymore. Anyone who know's JRT's should realize that this is a problem. He's not a standout specimen anymore for the bread, when before he was spot on. So yes, there will be changes. Be prepared for this. If I had to do it again I'm not sure that I would. I miss my dog. The new one I got back after the surgery is a great dog, just not the same one.....
  • he calmed down a year later and got lazy and fat
  • No, he still hates cats .hes still thin.the only difference is he doesnt run off eveytime a female is in heat.Hes still aggresive and attacks one of our other jacks.
  • it probably depends on the dog since theyre all different
