  • Because they was afraid or busy making money of slaves to consider that it was wrong. Because it was morally wrong, because no human can't own another human but God.
  • It was natural and just the way things were done and people could not envision a smoothly and effectively running society without slavery. Christianity eventually led people to look at it in terms of inequality.
  • Imho it was economics. Slavery was too inefficient in an industrial age. Traditionally a slave was considered 60% as efficient as a free man. But as jobs became more than mere menial work, this efficiency dropped like a rock. Why in the world would a slave strain himself to learn ever more complex problems in the workplace with no payoff to him? The creation of machinery to do farm work doomed slavery even in the US. So the Q is to what extent were Abolitionists-as small a group as they were in the US-a product of their times? Naturally, slavery had already been banned in England & other countries. And do note that the Bible, while mentioning many slaves, says nothing against slavery.
