Just got a 5mw laser and it seems ridiculously strong. what kind of damage would a 5mw laser do to the eye?

You'd likely be blinded before the initial light registered in your brain.

You need to wear proper optical filters over your eyes when you use one of those to keep the light from damaging your retina faster than a solar eclipse or welders arc. Faster than a blink and it can make you go blind. Be sure to get more than one pair so any guests in the room will also be properly protected as well.
