The atomic number of sodium is 11, meaning it will have 11 protons, and consequently 11 electrons around the nucleus. Remember, for every atom, the first energy level (shell) can potentially hold two electrons, the next level 8, the third level 18 and so on. Figuring out the electrom configuration for atoms with large atomic numbers becomes tricky because we start to have to divvy up the electrons into subshells based on lowest energy states. This is probably more than you want to know. Anyway, the answer to your question is 2 in the first shell, 8 in the second shell, 1 in the third shell. 2 + 8 + 1 = 11
