1596: Sir John Harington is said to have invented 'The Ajax', a forerunner to the modern flush toilet, for Elizabeth I of England, who wouldn't use the contraption because it made too much noise. His design was ridiculed in England, but was adopted in France under the name Angrez. The design had a flush valve to let water out of the tank, and a wash-down design to empty the bowl. 1738: A valve-type flush toilet was invented by J. F. Brondel. 1819: Albert Giblin received British patent 4990 for the "Silent Valveless Water Waste Preventer", a siphon discharge system. 1880s: Thomas Crapper's plumbing company built flush toilets of Giblin's design. After the company received a royal warrant, Crapper's name became synonymous with flush toilets. Although he was not the original inventor, Crapper popularized the siphon system for emptying the tank, replacing the earlier floating valve system which was prone to leaks. Some of Crapper's designs were made by Thomas Twyford. The similarity between Crapper's name and the much older word crap is merely a coincidence.

First unearthed in Asia in 2500 BC, the Romans brought it to to Britain to around 43 AD... The modern toilet was developed by Thomas Crapper, gawd bless him!, but The first ceramic Water Closet was introduced in 1848, due to a Public health Act, when Thomas Twyford made the Unitas, the first ceramic. Then Crapper came into his own! He campaigned for every home to have a toilet, to combat diseases such as cholera, which was rife. Bloody good job too - 'cos it wasn't long after that that Queenie was bringing home curries! LOL!! ;þ

Invention of Toilet cannot be attributed to any single person. The need to have a toilet emerged when humans started becoming civilized. Initially it must have been a hole in the ground. As time and invention capabilities improved better toilets got invented as a part of the social evolution. At present there are two types of Toilets basically - the dry and the flushable. Within these two types there are so many verieties which have got evolved over time. Infact I could not find exactly how many different types of toilets are there by doing a web search. Therefore looking for a specific person as the inventor of Toilets would be a futile effort.

John or Thomas Crapper? Or maybe it was Sir Crapsalot

Places to shit and piss have probably been around for time immemorial. The Romans were famous for their public toilets. If you mean the flushable toilet, it was some historical footnote named Edward Jennings in the 1850s. Plumber Thomas Crapper didn't invent it, despite popular misconception, but he did a lot to improve it supposedly.
