I have used a pen or pencil to keep my hair pulled back. I can twist my hair up and then stick a pen or pencil in it to hold it in place.

In extreme cases of emergencies certain kinds of pens could be used as a stabbing/thrusting weapon to immobilize your target.

use it in an old style duel...it is mightier than the sword. or, you can take the inner bit out and use the case to make some sort of spitball gun thing

A pen can be used as a "Kubotan" type of weapon, or with a bit of string on the end to stabilize its flight, it can be thrown or spun & launched like a sling. A plastic pen can be jammed in, twisted, and used to "pick" certain types of circular key locks, like the now famous "Kryptonite" bicycle lock. The thin metal pocket clip on some pens can be broken off and used to pick a standard tumbler lock. A pen or short stick can be used as a trigger mechanism for a twitch snare type of trap ... tie two strings to it, one in the middle and one at an end ... the middle line goes to the twitch device and is held with tension as the pen sits precariously between two hooks ... when the end line is pulled as the trigger for the trap part, the pen tilts and slides out of the hooks and activates the twitch part of the trap.

A pen can be used as the only instrument in a Tracheotomy. If the person is choking, and the object is lodged above the trachea, the pen can be stabbed into the windpipe, where the ribcage makes a V, then the pen "guts" can be removed to provide a breathing tube. This is only for emergency situations, and will require immediate medical attention as soon as possible. This can, however, save a life.

You can tie up your hair with a pen, pencil or paintbrush. Just twist it up and put the pen in. You can do it quickly when you have no hair ties or hairclips. Putting a pen or a pencil in your hair could also be a great way to go to work.
