  • I'm not quite sure what you mean by "Other than the literal meaning" but a theory is what all of the evidence suggests but not necessarily 100% correct and a theorem IS 100% correct. So the theory of evolution is a theory because all of the fossils and carbon dating etc. suggests that organisms' descendants are slightly different in such a way that they are better suited for their environment but then again we 'could' have been put here by some deity (if you believe in such a thing) and all of the fossils were put here aswell just to confuse us! a^2 + b^2 = c^2 on a right angled triangle is a theorem because it is ALWAYS true.
  • A theorem is a mathematical term for 1. a general proposition not self-evident but proved by a chain of reasoning; or 2. a rule, in algebra etc., especially one expressed by symbols. A theory is a supposition or system of ideas explaining something. According to my Oxford dictionary.
