What is sleepy dust and how does it get there?

I believe sleepy dust is the crust that collects in the corners of your eyes. Sometimes your eyes will water or goop up in your sleep, but because your eyes are closed it has nowhere to go. The salt and other minerals in them dry up and stay in the corners of your eyes.
