  • Absolutely! As a matter of fact, I am currently in the process of building my wife a bat house. We hope it proves successful in encouraging a bat colony to move in and hang out in our back yard. :) Bats are extremely beneficial creatures and terribly misunderstood. Bats eat their weight in mosquitoes and other garden pests every day. They are 'dead end' hosts for West Nile virus, which means they neither catch the disease from infected mosquitoes, nor transmit it back into the bird or human population. Bats are one of nature's most powerful defenses against insect born disease. Bats also act as the largest pollinators of plant species in the world's rain forests. Some facts from the BatCon website: "Most bats are valuable allies, well worth protecting. Worldwide, they are primary predators of vast numbers of insect pests that cost farmers and foresters billions of dollars annually and spread human disease. In the United States, little brown bats often eat mosquitoes and can catch up to 1,200 tiny insects in an hour. An average-sized colony of big brown bats can eat enough cucumber beetles to protect farmers from tens of millions of the beetle's rootworm larva each summer. Large colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats eat hundreds of tons of moth pests weekly. Bats play key roles in keeping a wide variety of insect populations in balance. Yet, they rank as North America's most rapidly declining and endangered land mammals. The largest known cause of decline is exaggerated human fear and persecution." They are one of nature's most necessary creations to the health of the entire planet, and one of the most feared and hated, much like snakes, sharks and wolves. Humankind needs to wake up to the understanding that if we continue to persecute and destroy those things which frighten us, we are ensuring our own demise. • We love bats. We have them living near our house and they are fascinating. We used to have bat houses at our old house and may need to make some for here, too, as we're closing up the places the bats like to nest in as we finish up the house lol! We caught one that was trapped inside. Cool!
