  • Though a dog can be neutered at any time, just after eight weeks is the standard. Before that, he should still be with his mother if possible.
  • Generally for Neutering you want to wait at least 6 MONTHS so that the dog has reached a point of sexual maturity close to being finished with "growing." If the dog has a RETAINED testis, you might even wait until he is 10 months of age. Neutering is generally considered to be a very simple, noninvasive surgery. That is, they don't usually need to "open the dog up" to get to the testis. Excepting with a retained testis, then yes, they will have to open the dog up to go look for it! (retained = ball didn't drop out to the exterior of the dog's body...you are missing one or both!) For any surgery the dog should be in good health to start with. You don't want to do a surgery when the animal has recently been ill, or had any vaccines which can cause negative reactions on their own for many animals. Unless there is a medical emergency regarding the reproductive system, then you should wait until at least 6 months of age.
  • Youngest i would recomend at least 12months....
  • 6 months is what most vets recommended this way the territorial marking behaviors arent in process and suck. 12 months as was recommended by another answer is way to old. Most behavioral issues that are to do with the male hormones are starting to develope by then and sometimes they can be very hard to reverse. Good luck and I hope i was of some help
