  • Freemdom can be looked at as psycho/socio/athropology. In one sense, it can be freedom to think whatever you want. In another, freedom to say whatever you want, so long as it doesn't offend society. And, as well, freedom to do whatever you want, so long as it doesn't put anyone's well-being at risk. Conclusion; freedom is only possible in a utopia...BUT, for the sake of argument, it is how you affect those around you...I suppose. Independence can be in the same gray area as freedom, except it is how you are affected by those around you. To be independent is to be mentally free. Perhaps, if this were a 'twelve-step program', there would be eleven steps of freedom before you reach true 'independence'. Of-course, that would contradict what I said about freedom being how you affect others and independence being how they affect you. Figures.
  • I am independent in that I take care of myself by myself and don't rely on someone else to do it. I earn my living, pay my own bills, get myself up for work in the morning, etc. I don't have freedom (yet) to totally do what I want when I want because I have responsibilities that must be taken care of. I've agreed to come to work regularly, the pets are dependent on me to be taken care of, etc. I think independence is more common than true freedom, but the two aren't dependent on each other.
  • To me, freedom is internal and/or applies to you only, and independence is external - applying to all others. It's a crude distinction, but essentially accurate in my opinion. Freedom is what you allow yourself to think or do; independence is what you allow others to do, or what others allow you to do. Therefore, I think this is why the Founders mention both Freedom and Independence. It's also why I think that (barring technological hijacking) you will always have your freedom, but you may not always have your independence. Peace and Freedom to you.
  • A child is free to walk outside as long as he remains in the fence. Independence is after the child leaves the fenced area. Freedom is when the astronaut leaves the space ship and roams the moon (connected to the oxygen source inside the ship)and then returns. He was free to roam as long as he stayed connected to his oxygen. Independence is when the astronaut cuts the oxygen source. Only then is he truly independent. Really then if you think deeply about it, we are never truly independent even though many act and think as though they are. Reggie G.
