  • Well i think the answer is in the bibel. The lak of truth and the divations of christiyanty has help this.
  • I think the reason is the literalism that plagues so much of Christian doctrine. Dogma, in the sense of just believing what you are told, or what you read, is inconsistent with critical thinking. (Critical thinking is hard work if you are not used to it.) :-) You can be a critical thinker and a good (better) Christian by testing your beliefs against what you learn about how the world works. My own belief is that there is a deep non-verbal basis for human morals and ethics that is widely shared among human groups. Including Christians.
  • Educated people are leaving Christianity cause they are SMART!
  • There is an apparent link between level of education and tendency toward atheism - so the trend is away from all beliefs in a god or gods, not just the christian one. Personally I see it as part of the progress of humanity. In a thousand years time I think the 'religious' aspect of mankind could look very different to now...
  • I think it is taught to us in the Bible, II Thessalonians Ch.2:1-5, which tells us that people will leave these beliefs, because the day of our Lord will not come "except there come a falling away first". And also, Matthew Ch. 24:22, it tells us that things will get so bad that "except those days be shortened", no one would be saved. I believe that, as there becomes more and more things to pull us (Christians) away from God, then more and more will leave.
  • Because satan fools them and leads them to be with the "in" crowd. They forget that the riches are up in heaven and not here on earth so they leave Christianity to pursue riches and glory. They are not firmly planted into Christ but into what they felt at the moment.
  • Ahem...if they were educated and civilized, they wouldn't be involved with Christianity
  • "Educated". "Civilized." You answered yourself. Christianity ain't for the educated or civilized.
  • i did it by my choice my mother is also educated and civilized but she is a very firm christian. i think it's a little thing we call free will these days.
  • I wasn't aware that this was the case. But if it is happening, I'll bet that it's because Christianity (in the U.S. at least) seems to be dominated by the fundamentalist religious right. A bunch of loud-mouthed bigots who have hijacked the image of the mainstream Christian. They have set themselves up as the voice of Christianity and the media just eat it up. After all, the ranting, torches-and-pitchfork crowd make much better soundbites than the dedicated and devout Christians quietly doing the actual work of Jesus Christ.
  • According to a 2003 Harris Poll, among Americans with post-graduate degrees-in other words, our country's most well-educated men and women-a whopping 85 percent believe in God. "Many scientists believe in God by the most mainstream, uppercase definition of the concept. Repeating verbatim a famous survey first conducted in 1916, Edward Larson of the University of Georgia has found that the depth of religious faith among scientists has not budged, regardless of whatever scientific and technical advances this century has wrought. Then as now, about 40% of the responding biologists, physicists and mathematicians said they believed in a God." ~Milwaukee Journal Sentenel It doesn't seem like that's happening despite the indoctrination of children in public schools to the state religion of Atheism.
  • Because they choose to.
  • Once you understand what two and two add up to you don't believe someone telling you it's seven.
  • My thoughts is the Church is leaving the earth this is Ok with me the end of the bible explains this at length and what it means.
  • You answered your own question there, didn't you. ;) Belief in God doesn't really work if you educate yourself in any of the sciences, because science teaches critical thinking. As a scientist you have to question everything and not accept anything without evidence. And even when you accept something with evidence you have to stay open to the possibility that you're wrong - the evidence might be flawed, or your reasoning might be inadequate. Maybe you're right in one context but wrong in another. Faith in God is directly contrary to that. You have to accept without evidence, and you must not question what you have accepted. If it doesn't make sense you must convince yourself that it doesn't matter. Counting philosophy as a science here doesn't make it any better. Replace "critical thinking" with "logical thinking" and it's the same deal. God is alogical, i.e. he is not subject to logical rules, so if you don't allow for the proverbial 2+2=5, God won't make sense to you. So, science/philosophy and religion make opposite claims, not just about how the world works, but more importantly about what's a valid way of thinking. You can reconcile them to some extent by dividing your mind into a reasoning part and a non-reasoning part, and indeed a lot of people do that. Some even try to use their academic smarts to find excuses for the non-smart things they believe. But all in all it's a stressful way to divide up your brain and more and more people are waking up to the fact of just how hard it is, and perhaps more importantly, how unnecessary it is.
  • (1Co 1:27) But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; (1Co 1:28) And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: (1Co 1:29) That no flesh should glory in his presence. (1Co 4:20) For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.
  • Modern Christianity has been sugar coated and dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. It's not surprising that intelligent people would find it simplistic and frankly ridiculous. That is a pity, because Christianity really does have a rich tradition and deep teachings. But in this modern culture, nobody can be bothered looking into it.
  • I really got tired of the simplicity of the bible and the selective ignorance of my fellow Christian friends. But I wouldn't call them uneducated or uncivilized, they were very bright people who just took the word of the bible as all they needed to know about life. Some people seek and some take in.
  • What do you mean by leaving Christianity? Do you mean leaving the churches or just leaving the whole religion altogether?
  • Not to be flippant, but you *did* use the words "educated" and "civilized"! So as not to throw down a 'drive by' answer, I believe people are waking up to the fact that they are indeed in control of their own lives and destiny. The old archaic principles and doctrines of the churches in many cases are not in step with today's modern world. People, myself included are realizing they can lead moral productive lives and be an active part of the community sans the bridle of Christianity.
  • There's no such thing as an "ex Christian". Leaving a church perhaps but true Christians just simply don't walk away from God. If a person walks away from Christianity then they weren't really Christians to begin with and Scripture is very clear on this. 1 John 2:18-19 "Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us." As you can see, the above Scripture sums it up well. They never were of us ((The Church of Jesus Christ), to begin with, so it's no big loss that these antichrist's did walk away. Being educated has absolutely nothing to do with what a person believes or doesn't believe. Civilized "unbelievers" are raping, pillaging, torturing, and martyring Christian believers on a daily basis. Not to mention killing each other. If that's being civilized and educated, I want no part of it.
  • Because there are far, far too many pastors and preachers who don't know their azz from a hole in the ground!
  • Education decreases religiosity. It only makes sense that education and civilization will weaken religions, most especially religions with a lot of literalistic believers who espouse repugnant ideas on the basis that their bronze-age holy book is infallible. Morons saying moronic things in the name of Gawd makes intelligent, educated people question this Gawd more deeply. Honest, rational questions are antithetical to religion.
  • Because Christianity is no longer the Christian religion it once was. Doctrine trumps faith now. Fundamentalists have affected all of the Christian world. Do unto others is really far more important that issues that Christians have become fixated on like homosexuals and abortion. There are many more issues with which Christians used to be concerned.
  • Poor management.
  • because all the smart people are now realizing that its no longer about religion bt about money so they are finding other religions that aren't based on money and power.
  • Christianity is growing, you just don't hear much on the subject as most Christians avoid organized religion. The drop in membership you mentioned I believe to be associated with 'churchianity" NOT Christianity. Churchianity has been on the decline for some time now, just too many scandals, scams & outright bilking going on in those outfits for most folks to put up with anymore. Both the Big Money Evangelicals(BME's)& the "charasmatics" have been recording record lows in congregation attendance. The pastor Haggard homo scandal a while ago really torpedoed the organized church businesses, and the decline in attendance is dropping steadily to this day.
  • I think they always have, since they know it's just a tool to control the fool.
  • When I was a child I was taught only of Christianity. Now I am older I have read about different religions and chosen another. When we are children we accept what is presented to us. When we become adults we have the intellect to choose whatever religion we so choose. Salaam
  • Because they have, in fact, seen the light.
  • Education and faith have no connection. They might gain knowledge from books, but this doesn't mean that they have any spiritual side. They may as well be in Hell.
  • Education decreases religiosity, for several reasons. If one understands both what knowledge is (a belief that is both justified and true) and the only process that has ever worked to advance knowledge (science), than any sort of supernatural origin to the universe looks crazy. One can never know anything about the supernatural (no possible justification for a belief). Posing a supernatural origin to the universe looks sillier and less necessary the more you know. Especially if you've learned something about both physics and information theory. Understanding these two concepts totally shuts down all talk of any sort of an intelligent, theistic god. Additionally, as one learns about other religions, and the history of religion in general, whatever religion you happen to have been brought up in looks more and more like "just another religion," than the "One True Religion."
  • If one agreed with the premise of your question they could postulate several reasons, if they didn't they would not agree that this is a question but only your contention. Without evidance to support your statement I do not see that there is anything to debate.
  • I will not argue about the validity of religions, that is pointless. But, I do agree that your question is based on a true and evident fact (just check which countries have the greatest number of non-believers, the greater the education level the greater the number of free thinking people). I would like to point at the feeling that people get about religions, in general. With the surge of technological means, people get faster and better informed. The overall outlook of religions (message, leaders and actions) seems aggressive, outdated, not very humane, irrelevant, presumptuous and insincere. Educated people think by themselves, are less and less wiling to follow "leaders" and hate to label themselves. Religions were designed in a different world, for peoples whose lives had little in common with modern men and women.
  • define "most educated."
  • Educated Christians leave the faith because the ignorant Christians are too millitant.
  • In the United States, religious attendance rises sharply with education across individuals, but religious attendance declines sharply with education across denominations. This puzzle is explained if education both increases the returns to social connection and reduces the extent of religious belief. The positive effect of education on sociability explains the positive education-religion relationship. The negative effect of education on religious belief causes more educated individuals to sort into less fervent religions, which explains the negative relationship between education and religion across denominations. Cross-country differences in the impact of education on religious belief can explain the large cross-country variation in the education-religion connection. These cross-country differences in the education-belief relationship can be explained by political factors (such as communism) which lead some countries to use state-controlled education to discredit religion.
  • Because they're intelligent enough to see common sense for themselves. And because they see factual evidance and realise that life has more to offer. They soon see why religion is extremely sad. sorry to offend those but end of the day you only live once, live your life, don't live the way a religion wants you to live. Give me bad feedback all you want, i have a good life im happy and i know that im not religious and im glad im not. end of!
  • The study cited referred to scientists, your question asks about the most educated which are not always the same. My first thought is scientists as a rule are more logical / anal / more detailed which in many ways is contrary to faith - believe in that without evidance. My other concerns would be with the way the study / poll was conducted. How were the questions asked, to whom and how were the respondants checked for honesty. I am not attempting to refute, but nor would I be willing to defend it either. Thanks +3 for the question - wish I had more answers and fewer questions. Could not get it to take this as a comment so posted it as another reply.
  • Please supply your source information.
  • Exactly.
  • Cite your references.
  • May I know the basis of your assumption/presumption?
  • 'Education' implies college, college is a giant indoctrination factory for the Left. To get through your doctoral candidacy, you have to play ball with the 'establishment' (thesis committee), if you're willing to do that, you're generally willing to compromise your core principles anyway, so, you lose your critical faith to gain approval and your degree.
  • What Can I say? Maybe they value scientific knowledge more than faith. They know that science has more evidence than faith but that's only on a materialistic level.
  • Because they are educated and civilized?
  • I think you answered your question w/your question. Educated and civilized.
  • Demographically, it's the other way around, actually.
  • Because they're educated and civilized
  • They've turned their attention away from the Bible. What they fail to realize is that the Word isn't going anywhere; we are.
  • Because as the bible says, in the last part of time people will turn away and turn to the antichrist. thank God I will no be one of those people.
  • Religion was created to answer three questions: Where did we come from? Where do we go when we die? Where does the sun go every night? Two of those three questions have been answered without the words "God did it" appearing in the explanation. Since there's no obvious logical way to know for certain where we "go" when we die, there will always be a group of people who need the reassurance of a deity.
  • Because. . .they are educated and civilized
  • Because the more educated you get (especially in the subject matter of religion) the more you see Christianity for what it is and what it is not! Studying Christianity is actually what led me to realize it was a false lie of madness.
