Rigor mortis wears off within approximately 72 hours from the time of death.

The wearing-off time depends upon several factors: cause of death, muscle tone, and environmental factors. With some it is very slight; with others it is more pronounced. Usually, if left alone, rigor mortis will recede in 12 to 72 hours. Once gone, it does not return. In preparing the body for embalming, the embalmer will relieve the rigor by massaging the affected muscles and manipulating the affected body parts.
